Levi Lassenzaal

Keynote 1 by Mike Hind: In ‘Fake it ‘til you break it – disrupting democracy by astroturfing & online disinformation’ Mike outlines how hyper-partisan political and social points of view are seeded on social media platforms. And how those environments provide a built-in advantage to those who ‘game’ them by creating fake armies of supporters.

Parallel breakout sessions afternoon

Michael Chessum: Momentum is a grassroots campaigning network of over 31,000 members, 200,000 supporters and 170 local groups that evolved out of Jeremy Corbyn’s 2015 election campaign. Momentum is mobilising the mass campaigning movement that tries to get Labour into government. Michael will share his experiences in mobilizing new and disenfranchised voters.

Maya Saikali: While trying to challenge the highly regimented and traditional notion of “politics” in Lebanon, Beirut Madinati‘s campaign explored diversified tools and forms of communication stemming from a people-centered program that allowed to gain 40% of the votes and led to the emergence of a political movement. Maya’s presentation will reflect upon the role of social media in political campaigning through insights on the communication strategy and its public manifestation.  She will also consider the participatory aspect of the campaign, the dynamics and processes that allowed the party to shift from a campaign into a political movement.

Studio

Kal Turnbull: Kal set out to do the impossible: cordon off a space for measured, civil conversation between people who believe in different things. Now there are over 450.000 members on ‘Change My View’ subreddit. His presentation will detail the reasons he started ‘Change My View’, how it works, and what it has achieved. He hopes to demonstrate the benefits of such a forum, and the lessons we can learn going forward in everyday life, education, and democracy.
